Knitting creates interconnected loops that give the fabric its characteristic stretch, softness and flexibility.

The structure of the knit influences:

5. GSM Is Not the Same as Softness

GSM—grams per square metre—is a measure of fabric weight, not a direct measure of softness.

Similarly, two fabrics with the same GSM can have completely different textures depending on their fibre, yarn and construction.

That's why premium fabric selection involves much more than simply choosing a particular GSM.

6. Finishing Gives Cotton Its Final Feel

After knitting and dyeing, fabrics can undergo different finishing processes.

These processes can influence the fabric's surface, appearance, dimensional stability and hand feel.

A well-finished cotton fabric can feel smoother, cleaner and more refined.

But finishing should enhance the natural qualities of the fabric rather than simply create an artificial sensation of softness.

For a premium garment, the objective is not temporary softness.

It is lasting comfort.

7. Why Some Cotton Becomes Softer With Wear
